Department of Computer Science
The Department provides students with academic and professional skills in the field of computer science with emphasis on development and research in software and hardware systems. In addition to these skills, they can enhance and consolidate their ability with practical experience by means of a year-long, supervised, computer science project in local IT companies or universities. Graduates are strongly equipped with their IT professional knowledge, to solve existing technical problems, to meet challenges, and to create new technology in the field of IT services.
Characteristics of the Computer Science Programme
The programme is well designed with a balanced curriculum by grouping subjects into broad learning areas that facilitate all-round development of students, especially in creativity, critical thinking, independent learning and inter-personal communication. We expect our graduates to have a broad spectrum of knowledge and balanced development in the domains of ethics, intellect, physique, social skills and aesthetics. In view of these, we provide wide coverage of liberal arts courses, such as general history of China, contemporary history of China, humanities, general psychology and international relations, for all students within the four-year duration of their studies.
Classification of Courses
The courses in the programme are divided into six major domains consisting of computer science core, software development, Internet systems, network and computer systems, advanced topics in computer science and final year project. The courses are organised under these domains to provide systematic and progressive steps to guide our students into different career prospects and academic achievements. Computer science core courses serve as the building blocks for advanced studies and research whereas the software development, Internet systems and computer and network systems courses help students develop their professional careers. Computer science core and advanced courses prepare them to pursue further postgraduate education and research. The subject groups are detailed in the following sections.
